Capricorn Dates of Birth
Is Your Zodiac Sign Really Capricorn?
Usually, people born between December 22 and January 20 have Capricorn as their sun sign, because that is the Zodiac sign where the sun was at their birth. But it differs a little from year to year, because of the leap years.
The Leap Year BumpIn astrology, your Capricorn Zodiac sign (also called sun sign or star sign) is decided by the position of the sun at the moment of your birth, as seen from Earth. The sun takes a year to travel through the twelve Zodiac signs, but it's not exactly a year of 365 days. The time it takes is closer to 365.25 days. That's why we have leap years.
Ephemeris, table of planetary positions, from the Renaissance.
The leap years make the dates of each Zodiac sign change slightly. Normally, Capricorn starts on December 22, right after the winter solstice, and ends on January 20, but that's just the mean. In reality it changes slightly in a four year period from one leap year to the next.
Here are the leap years since the beginning of the 20th century:
If you were born on the 22nd of December or the 20th of January, you have to check if you're really a Capricorn or not. It never differs more than a day in each direction. The start of Capricorn is on the 21st or 22nd of December, and the end of it almost always on the 20th of January. People born on other dates need not be concerned.
Cusp or notIf you were born on December 21st or 22nd, your sun may be on the very cusp (the starting point) of Capricorn, or right by the end of Sagittarius. If you were born on the 20th of January, your sun might be at the very end of Capricorn or at the cusp of Aquarius.
You need to check with the Zodiac Sign Calculator (see the link below) or your exact horoscope, because on those dates it depends on what time of day you were born - and in what place.
It's particularly important with this check If you were born far away from Greenwich, England, since that's the base for the dates given for Capricorn.

Mixed Zodiac SignsNow, If you were born on December 21st or 22nd at a time when your sun is at the very end of Sagittarius, you probably have a mixture of Sagittarius and Capricorn in your character. It's a Sagittarius inclined to be more of a Capricorn. If your sun is at the very start (cusp) of Capricorn, though, you're definitely a Capricorn - and a firm one at that.
If your sun is at the very end of Capricorn, you may show personality traits of both Capricorn and Aquarius, but If you were born at the very start of Aquarius, no matter how early in it, you're most definitely an Aquarius.
That's because each sign is the most powerful at its beginning, its cusp.
Decans Make a DifferenceThe strongest is not equal to the most typical, though. A Zodiac sign is its most typical at the part of it (decan) corresponding to its quality: cardinal, fixed or mutable.
Each Zodiac sign belongs to one of the four elements fire, earth, air, and water. It's also one of the three qualities. So, four elements and three qualities make twelve possible combinations - the twelve signs of the Zodiac.
Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign. That means its most typical part is the first one - the ten degrees making its first decan, 1°-10° Capricorn. That corresponds approximately to the dates December 22-31. If your birth date is within this range, you're likely to be a very typical Capricorn.
If you were born in early January, the 1st to 10th, you're still a Capricorn, but with character traits comparable to those of Taurus (the fixed earth sign). If you were born on January 11-20. you have some tendencies similar to those of Virgo (the mutable earth sign).
But the most important thing to decide is what sign you are. So, If you were born on December 21st-22nd or January 20th, please check with the Zodiac Sign Calculator (see the link below), or get your complete horoscope chart, to be sure of your star sign.
